Treating Angular Cheilitis

26 April, 2010 No Comments

Angular cheilitis is not a contagious disease. But the ugly blisters on your mouth would definitely scare people around you. To avoid embarrassment, you should not ignore this severe symptom of cracked lips as soon as you notice at the corners of your mouth.

Symptoms of angular cheilitis

Angular cheilitis is characterized by painful lesions or sores at the corners of the mouth. The sores are often cracked, further worsening the pain. The skin around the mouth and especially at both the corners becomes red and rashy. You will experience intense pain while eating, drinking and even while talking.

Angular cheilitis causes

Several factors could lead to this unsightly and painful condition. Nutrient deficiency is frequently blamed for this disease. People suffering from iron deficiency are vulnerable to angular cheilitis. Cracked corner of the mouth is a symptom of iron deficiency. Deficiency of B vitamins, especially vitamin B12, could produce cracks and sore at the corner of the mouth. Wearing improper or loosely fitted dentures could make the corners of your mouth vulnerable to angular cheilitis.

The improper dentures will keep your mouth slightly open. Saliva pouring out of the mouth is trapped in the skin fold at the corners of the mouth, creating a favorable moist area for the survival of harmful bacteria and fungi. You can develop angular cheilitis if you have the bad habit of licking your lips or wiping the corners of your mouth. Severe chapped or cracked lips could trigger angular cheilitis.

Angular cheilitis remedies

Angular cheilitis responds favorably to simple home remedies. Meeting your nutritional requirement could help to cure the disease fast. Angular cheilitis could be treated by taking vitamin B complex and iron supplements. Applying vitamin B creams and vitamin E on the sore can heal it fast. Eat foods that are rich in these nutrients. Apply a lip moisturizer with sunscreen on your lips. The lip balm will protect your lips from sun and cold, two common factors associated with angular cheilitis. Milk, dairy products, legumes, whole grains, lean meats, nuts, seeds, bananas, cabbage and cauliflower will provide the nutrition essential for curing this disease.
