Winter comprises many features that make people look forward to it. Snowfall, Christmas, warm clothes and cups of hot chocolate – these are some of the comforting images we can associate with this season. Of course, negative aspects exist too but focusing on the positive side is essential to enjoy this season to the fullest.
Another important event that we can associate with winter is the winter solstice. Just like summer solstice is the longest day of the day, the winter solstice is the longest night of the year. Generally, it occurs at a time between December 21 and 22 in the northern hemisphere and June 20 and 21 in the southern hemisphere.
Following are a few suggestions on how to celebrate this festival:
Food and wine
The feast for a winter solstice celebration can vary according to your taste and convenience. For a dinner party, arrange a three-course menu. Start with both vegetarian and non-vegetarian appetizers. For the main course, cook one dish like grilled steaks, lasagna or pasta. For dessert, you can serve chocolate cake or cookies.
You can also have a potluck feast, where everyone can contribute something. A simple fare would be best in this case – salads, soups, mashed potatoes, mushrooms, cheese and almonds or dates etc.
Don’t forget the drinks; it wouldn’t feel like winter without a steaming hot mug of hot chocolate, tea, or cider. A bottle of red wine would also be a good choice.
Music and lights
If the party is indoors, light up the house with candles of different shapes, sizes and colors. These will brighten up the place and also serve as luminous décor. For an outdoor celebration, a bonfire would serve best. Ensure that you have the right help if building fires is not your area of expertise.
Organize some games for everyone to play after which all the revelers can sing songs together. Celebrate winter solstice with friends and family, and let the revelry continue all night long.
