Skin Problems in Dogs

Skin diseases are the most important and frightening diseases that makes the dog owners worry. The skin of the dog remains as an indicator for its general health. If you feed your dog with nutritious and well balanced diet they he may have less problems. Even after feeding your dog well it may get skin disease and it can be due to allergies, bacterial, fungal or parasitic infection.



Allergies

Allergy towards food, flea, pollen, dust, medication, grass etc may cause irritations on the skin. There may develop rashes and the skin may become red. The dog may experience severe itching and discomforts like sneezing, eye and nasal discharge etc.



Parasitic Skin Disease

The parasites that affect the dogs include fleas, lice, mites, mange, ticks etc. Among them sarcoptic mange causes loss of hair, itching and crusting of the skin while demodectic mange makes the skin red and scaly along with itching. Mites may cause ear infection. ticks, fleas, lice etc may cause irritations on the skin.




Fungal Skin Infection

Fungal skin infection is caused by trichophyton and microsporum species of fungi and the skin disease is called as ringworm disease. These fungi lives in dead hairs, tissues, nails etc and make crusty and dry patches on the skin. There may be itching on the affected regions and it may occur anywhere on the skin.

Bacterial skin Infection

If your dog scratches its body and have formed a wound, then it may pave the way for bacterial infection. The bacteria once entered in to the skin may cause swelling, redness, pain and warmth on the infected area. There may be pus and discharge from the infected area. Pyoderma is a bacterial infection seen in dogs like pug and obese dogs. It develops in between the skin folds on lips, face and vulva.

Hormonal Skin Disease

Adrenal glands, thyroid glands, ovaries, pituitary gland etc produces hormones. When the balance of these hormones goes high or low then it may cause hair and skin problems in your dog. The skin of the dog becomes thin or thick depending up on the concentration of the hormones and there may color change on the skin. The hair on both sides of the body may fall evenly.
