Serving: 4 persons
Prep Time: 1 hour
Cooking Time: 30-35 minutes

4-6 pieces of Shad fish
60 grams of Coconut
25 grams of Mustard paste
1 tsp of Turmeric powder
125 grams of Grated Cucumber
1 tsp of Cumin seeds
3 tsp of Flour
100 ml of Mustard oil, for cooking
4-6 Green chilies
2 Red chilies
Salt, as per taste
1/2 tsp of Sugar

Cut the coconut into small pieces and transfer it to a grinder with a little water. Grind to make a smooth coconut paste. Make sure that there are no lumps. Now in a mixing bowl take the flour, mustard paste, coconut paste, green chilies and the mustard oil and combine to make a mixture. Set the bowl aside for later use. Wash the Shad pieces thoroughly by placing them under running water. Keep washing till it runs clear water.  Keep them in a bowl and add 1 teaspoon of salt and a pinch of sugar to them and combine.

Marinate the fish for 15 to 20 minutes. When done, mount a deep-bottomed pan with the cooking oil in it on medium heat. When the oil has been heated through give the cumin seeds and red chilies into the pan.

After the spluttering ends put in the grated cucumber, a little sugar and a little water. Stir the contents continuously until water comes out from the cucumber. Let it cook for sometime till all the water dries up. Then put the fishes in the pan and spread the spicy coconut mixture evenly on the pieces of fish in a single layer. Put the remaining spice mixture into the gaps of the fishes. Put a lid on the pan and leave it to be cooked again on low heat. After 20 minutes, when the fishes become cooked, remove from heat on serving platter. Pierce a fork to check if the fishes are done. Serve hot with steamed rice.
