Rice Diet For Weight Loss

In the 1930s, while studying the effect of diet on health, Dr. Walter Kempner, a doctor associated with Duke Hospital, formulated the Rice Diet Solution, which could effectively treat a number of diseases.

The Rice Diet was formulated to treat people suffering from diabetes, hypertension and kidney problems. It is an effective weight loss program, capable of bringing down the body weight within a short period.



Rice Diet Solution

The Rice Diet Solution is an in-house weight loss program. Dieters are required to spend two to four weeks in the treatment facility located in Durham, NC. Following the immense popularity of the program, Robert and Kitty Rosati wrote a book titled ‘The Rice Diet Solution’ to help dieters follow the rice diet at home.



Rice diet plan

The rice diet is a low calorie, low protein and low fat diet. The meals should comprise primarily of rice, fresh fruits and vegetables, legumes and fish. Despite its name, rice is not the dominant food item in the diet. It is one of the 30 food items that dieters are allowed to have in any given meal. It is advisable to replace white rice with brown rice.




Brown rice contains more fiber, protein, vitamin E and magnesium than white rice. You can also have parboiled rice, which is steamed before it is dried and polished to make white rice. The steaming process enables the parboiled rice to retain the minerals and B vitamins. However, you can include white rice fortified with B vitamins and iron in your diet.

Rice diet is a low sodium diet plan. Dieters are advised to limit salt intake. To get rid of the excess salt from the body and to prevent water retention, your daily salt intake should be less than 500 mg per day. This salt restricted diet plan is beneficial for people suffering from hypertension and kidney problems.

Dieters should consume not more than 20 grams of protein per day. They should meet most of their daily protein requirement from legumes, beans, fish and low fat milk and dairy products. They should avoid alcohol, caffeine, processed foods, fried foods and sugar. Artificial sweeteners in very low doses could be taken.
