Penile Yeast Infection – Causes and Treatment

Penile yeast infection usually occurs in uncircumcised men. It is rare in circumcised men. Yeasts require warm and moist environment to survive.

By removing the foreskin through circumcision, the glans is exposed to the air. This helps to keep the glans dry, thus minimizing the risk of penile yeast infection.

If left untreated, penile yeast infection could spread to the urethra. Rarely, the fungal infection might spread to the prostate gland. Itching, thick white penile discharge and presence of small lesions on the head of the penis are the common symptoms of penile yeast infection. Sometimes penile yeast infection occurs without any noticeable symptom.

Causes of penile yeast infection
Penile yeast infection occurs due to overgrowth of Candida yeast. Normally the Candida yeasts live on the moist membranes of the body, such as in the mouth and in the genital area. The beneficial bacterial flora present in these areas of the body prevents excess growth of these yeasts. Overgrowth of yeast occurs when the beneficial bacterial balance in the penis is disrupted.

Poor immunity is one of the major causes of penile yeast infection. Thyroid disorder, lyme disease and chronic stress could impair normal immune functions, leading to yeast overgrowth. Diabetics are at a greater risk of catching yeast infection.

Presence of excess sugar in the urine creates a favorable environment in the penis for yeast growth. Beneficial bacteria living in penis might be killed by antibiotic medications, leading to yeast growth in the penis. Sexual intercourse with a woman suffering from vaginal yeast infection is one of the common causes of penile yeast infection.

Penile yeast infection treatment
Penile yeast infections are usually treated with antifungal medications. Usually the topical antifungal medications used for treating vaginal yeast infections are recommended for treating penile yeast infection. The ointment should be applied to the penis twice a day, at least for a week.Penile yeast infection could be treated by applying organic coconut oil on the penis.

Men suffering from yeast infection should consume unsweetened yogurt or other probiotic products. By restoring the normal bacterial balance in the penis, the acidophilus bacteria present in probiotic foods help to cure the yeast infection.
