Nokia Launches N900 – The First Maemo Smartphone

Escalating the tensions of its rivals, including Apple and RIM, Nokia has launched this outstanding smartphone, which will be the first Nokia phone to run on Linux platform. Nokia’s experiments with the Linux platform failed miserably in 2005, when it first included this computing software in Nokia 770. Learning from its past mistakes, Nokia has finally managed to incorporate both computing and mobile calling functions successfully inside Nokia N900.

Nokia N900 will not only be the latest member of Nokia’s N series family, but it will also be the most impressive member of the family. With greater speed, Nokia N900 is designed to eclipse the popularity of N97 to some extent. This new N series smartphone will run on Linux based Maemo platform.

The handset functions will be powered by the Cortex-A8 processor of ARM. The Mozilla powered browser of N900 is designed to resemble PC-like web browsing experience. The online videos and multimedia displays will support Adobe Flash 9.4. The 3.5-inch WVGA touch sensitive display of Nokia N900 is equipped to support high-resolution images of 480 x 800 pixels. Users can customize the home screen by adding their favorite apps, widgets and shortcuts on the home screen. N900 has a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard. On screen typing help features, including word completion function, eases the typing task.

The 5-megapixel camera is another asset of this Nokia smartphone handset. The attributes of the camera of Nokia N900 include 3x zoom, Carl Zeiss lens, flash, CMOS sensor, video recorder and Photo Editor. The music player integrated in N900 includes MP3 and Maemo Media Player. Nokia N900 has a vast storage capacity. The internal 32GB storage space of this smartphone could be externally expanded up to 48GB with microSD memory card. Nokia N900 will run on the quad band GSM and tri band WCDMA networks. The sleek body of N900 handset is 111mm long, 60mm wide and 18mm thick. It weighs 181 grams.

Nokia N900 will be available in the retail stores from October. It will need big spenders to buy this $710 smartphone from Nokia.
