A large number of commercial insecticides are available in the market that helps to keep the bugs at bay. However, sometimes the harsh chemical ingredients present in these insect repellents could be hazardous for our health.
Instead of using these commercial insecticides, we can make insect repellents at home with natural ingredients. Natural insect repellents are not only effective in keeping insects and pests away from our homes, but they are also safe for our health.
To prevent mosquito bite, you can apply an insect repellent allover the exposed parts of your body. Several essential oils act as natural mosquito repellents. Cinnamon oil, castor oil, eucalyptus oil and citronella oil can be used as natural mosquito repellent. To make natural mosquito repellent, mix about 15 to 20 drops of any essential oil with about two tablespoons of sunflower or olive oil. Besides vegetable oil, you can also mix alcohol with the essential oils. To repel mosquito, you can also rub alcohol, such as vodka, on your skin.
If you find cockroaches running all over your house, nibbling on the scraps in your kitchen, you can use catnip to kill these menaces. You can boil two to three tablespoons of catnip in about 500ml of water for about 10 to 15 minutes. Spray this catnip decoction in those areas of your house where the cockroaches are most active. However, do not use catnips if you have cats in your house. Boric acid can be used for killing cockroaches. It will kill the insects feeding on it. Garlic, bay leaves, hedgeapple and cucumber slices can be used as cockroach deterrents.
To keep ants away from your sugar jars, put few cloves of garlic in the jar. You can also use cinnamon, grounded coffee beans, cucumber, clove and juice of any citrus fruit to deter ants. Mint tea bags or dry mint leaves can also be used as ant repellent.
