Fleas are not only annoying for your pets causing itching and irritation, but they can also cause more serious health hazards. If left untreated, dog fleas can cause allergies and anemia. Fleas also carry harmful intestinal tapeworms, which could easily enter your dog’s intestine, causing digestive problems. In rare instances, fleas can also be fatal for your pet.
Causes of dog flea
Dogs get fleas from their surrounding. Fleas present on other pets, in the house or in the garden, might inflict your pet. Fleas in various stages might be present on the coat of your dog. It is difficult to detect the small flea eggs, larva and pupa hidden inside the hairs on your pet’s coat. Fleas become easily visible in the adult stage.
Symptoms of dog fleas
Intense itching is the first sign of flea infestation. Fleas cause skin irritation. Signs of scratches, bites, hair loss and broken skin are symptoms of fleabites.
Dog flea remedy
Removing flea from the coat of your dog is not the only method of treating dog flea problem. Besides removing flea from your pet, a complete dog flea remedy includes removal of flea from your house and garden as well. Besides killing the adult fleas, the eggs, larva and pupa should also be eliminated.
To remove fleas from your house, frequently vacuum clean your entire house. Carefully clean the areas where your dog sleeps. Do not miss the corners of the room, underneath furniture, carpet and upholsteries where the fleas in different stages of development and the adult insects might be present. After vacuuming, immediately discard the dust in a sealed bag.
Occasionally, spray an insecticide capable of killing fleas in your house. Don’t forget washing your pet’s bed with an antiseptic solution to prevent growth of pests. Besides cleaning the interior of your house, remember to clean your car and garage in the same manner.
You patio can also be a source of fleas. However, keeping the outdoor environment free from fleas is a difficult task. Fleas prefer warm, damp and dark spots. They can also be present in areas where organic debris accumulates.
You can use shampoos, rinses, topical products and sprays to kill fleas living on your pet. Your vet might prescribe oral medications. It takes a few weeks to several months for these products to produce the desired result.
