Turmeric, whose botanical name is Curcuma Longa, is a member of the ginger family. The spice is derived from the rhizome or underground stem of the plant. Turmeric is consumed in the form of powder, paste or juice to cure several health disorders. Its therapeutic properties are derived from curcumin, a plant compound found in the spice.

Antibiotic
You can use turmeric to heal wounds. Applying turmeric paste on the site of the injury prevents infections.

Cures liver disorder
Turmeric enhances the detoxification function of the liver. Having a slice of turmeric rhizome every day, early in the morning on empty stomach, improves liver function. By stimulating the liver function, turmeric helps to remove harmful toxins from the body. This spice could also protect the liver from cirrhosis and hepatitis.

Indigestion remedy
Regular intake of turmeric could aid digestion. Turmeric promotes bile secretion and stimulates bile flow. It also aids in the digestion of fats. Consumption of turmeric could cure peptic ulcer. Turmeric juice can be taken to cure flatulence and bloating.

Reduces menstrual cramp
If every month, during your period, you suffer from menstrual cramps, turmeric can come to your aid. To reduce menstrual cramps, two weeks before the expected date of your menstruation, start eating a slice of turmeric twice every day.

Skin care
Turmeric is good for the skin. In traditional Indian medicine, this spice is used for treating various skin conditions. Applying turmeric paste on the skin helps to retain its natural glow. Its antibiotic action prevents pimples and acne. Turmeric is also a powerful antioxidant. It can delay the aging process. Regular consumption as well as external application of turmeric could prevent wrinkles and fine lines. This spice can also be used for curing eczema, acne and psoriasis.

Asthma remedy
Add one teaspoon of turmeric powder to a cup of milk and boil it. Drink it to reduce the symptoms of asthma.
