Sunburn is the harmful effect on the skin caused by sun rays. Sunburn may cause red patches on the skin which at times becomes blisters. Sunburn may also leads to dry skin and may also cause dryness, irritation, inflammation and pain in the affected area. Sunburn may also lead to skin cancer and aging. The skin pigment melanin protects the skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun but when the exposure of the skin to the UV rays exceeds the melanin’s ability to protect the skin, it lead to sunburn. Hence sunburn has to be treated and here are some remedies for sunburn.

Remedies for Sunburn


Take a diet rich in vitamin E and C and the antioxidant property of these vitamins may protect you from sunburn and give strength to your skin internally. Foods like fish, meat, egg, chicken, fruits and vegetables are found to be enriched with these vitamins. Also hydrate your skin by drinking  lot of water.

Aloe Vera

Make a paste of aloe vera and apply it in the inflamed part of the skin. This may reduces the inflammation and protects the skin from further damage.

Oatmeal and Baking Soda

Fill your bathtub with cold water containing one pound each of oatmeal and baking soda. Immerse your body in this water for about 30 minutes. Or you can also apply cold compresses on the affected part with cold water mixed with baking soda and oatmeal.


Dip a wash cloth in cold milk and apply it on the sunburned area. This may help you to get rid of the harmful effects of the sunrays.

Sandalwood Paste

Take some sandalwood powder and mix it with some water to make a paste. Apply his paste on the affected area and wash off when the paste dries off.

Tomato and Buttermilk

Take six tablespoon buttermilk in a bowl and to this add one tablespoon tomato juice and combine them well. Spread this mixture on the affected skin and wash off after 30 minutes.

Honey and Egg Mixture

Take a raw egg and beat it well. Then add one tablespoon honey and barley flour to make a thick paste. Use this paste to cover the sunburned area on the skin and keep it for 30 minutes. Then rinse off with cool water.
