Millions of people worldwide are victims of diabetes. This metabolic disorder is characterized by inadequate amount of insulin secretion in the body, inhibiting the body’s ability to break down sugar or glucose present in the body. This increases the level of sugar in the blood. In a healthy person, the blood sugar level should remain between 70mg/dL and 110mg/dL at fasting. Bitter gourd juice contains oleanolic acid glycosides, charatin and polypeptide P. These plant compounds stimulate production of beta cells that are responsible for insulin secretion in the pancreas. Besides consuming juice of bitter gourd, taking bitter gourd seeds is also beneficial for diabetes sufferers.
Curry leaves are used in Sri Lankan and South Indian cooking. These aromatic leaves are also favorable for diabetes patients. Eating about eight to ten fresh curry leaves every day, in the morning before breakfast, helps to reduce the high sugar level in the blood stream.
Fenugreek seeds are noted for their blood sugar reducing properties. Plant chemicals such as alkaloid trogonelline, nicotinic acid and coumarin, present in curry leaves stimulates secretion of insulin. To normalize their blood sugar level, people suffering from diabetes can take a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds powder everyday.
Drinking herbal tea made with string beans could help to normalize blood sugar level. The insulin-like compound present in string bean, makes it an appropriate food for diabetic patients.
Having Â½ teaspoon of cinnamon powder daily is useful for diabetes patients.
