Food Aversion During Pregnancy During the early stage of pregnancy, women experience food aversion and lack of appetite. Often pregnant moms are worried about the adverse consequence of food aversion on the health of the growing fetus. However, doctors assure their patients that there is nothing to worry about food aversion during the first trimester of pregnancy. This is a normal part of pregnancy, which is not harmful for the unborn child.

Why food aversion occurs
The exact cause of food aversion is unknown. Hormonal changes are believed to be responsible for the condition. Studies have shown that at least 85 percent pregnant women experience food aversion during the first trimester of pregnancy. Food aversion is accompanied by extreme sensitivity to smell and nausea or morning sickness. Some researchers believe that food aversions, especially aversion towards caffeine and alcohol, might be the body’s natural process to avoid foods that are harmful during pregnancy. Nonetheless, there is no scientific evidence to support this theory of food aversion during pregnancy.

Treating food aversion
While a pregnant woman is suffering from food aversion, the adequate amount of nutrients already stored in her body helps to nourish the growing fetus. Nonetheless, you should be careful to avoid nutrient deficiency due to food aversion during pregnancy. To deal with food aversion, you should substitute food that you dislike with foods with similar nutritional content.

Aversion to animal protein, such as fish, meat and egg is quite common during the first trimester of pregnancy. You can replace your animal protein dishes with greater amount of plant proteins. You can enjoy whole grains, nuts, peas, beans and lentils. If you don’t like milk, you can obtain calcium from yogurt, cheese and other dairy products. Even several vegetables are rich in calcium. Green leafy vegetables, broccoli, cooked beans and sesame seeds are some rich sources of calcium. Increasing consumption of fresh fruits, vegetables and nuts is sufficient to meet your nutritional requirements during pregnancy. Dehydration can be harmful during pregnancy. If you dislike drinking at least eight to ten glasses of water everyday, you should include fresh fruit juices and vegetable soups in your daily diet. Fortunately, food aversions do not last for a long time.
