Dog vaccinations are a must if you’re keeping a dog at your home. Vaccinations make the dog’s immune system strong; vaccinations detect the presence of various infectious diseases and causative organisms early and respond to their attack.

This protects your dog from developing any serious health problems. Majority of the vaccinations are taken subcutaneously or intra venomously.You can either take your dog to the veterinary hospital or can take these vaccinations at home. You need to vaccinate your dog at proper time to prevent the diseases. Here are some of the important dog vaccinations.

Dog Vaccination Schedule

There are two types of vaccines like core vaccine and non core vaccine.

Core Vaccine

Rabies Vaccine

Rabies is a viral disease which is incurable and fatal. It may also get transmitted to human beings. Hence rabies vaccination is necessary. Rabies vaccination is given at the age of 16 to 18 weeks old. The first booster dose is then given after one year and there after boosters are given in every three years gap.

Canine Distemper Combination Vaccine

This vaccination is against  virus like distemper virus, parainfluenza virus, adenovirus and  parvovirus. This single injection is given when the dog is 6 to 8 weeks old and should be repeated in every 3 to 4 weeks period. Canine distemper virus cause nervous and respiratory problems and is highly contagious.  Canine parvovirus cause diarrhea and vomiting and it may leads to the death of the dog. Parainfluenza and adenovirus cause serious respiratory problems.

Non Core Vaccines

Lyme Disease Vaccine

This vaccination is recommended for areas where infections spread through tick are common. . Ticks carrying Borrelia burgdorferii will transmit these oraganisms to the dog through their bite and cause lyme disease. It may then leads to cardiac, neurological diseases, kidney diseases diseases, joint crippling etc. Hence vaccination is better and you need to take two doses of vaccine in  three weeks intervals and then booster dose should be given in every year.

Bordetella Vaccine

If your puppy is exposed to many other dogs like going for training, dog show etc then it will be better to take this vaccination. You have to give this vaccine in every 6 months or annually.
