Ulcer is developed when there is damage to the lining of the stomach or intestinal membrane and then the gastric juices in the digestive tract comes in contact with the inner part of digestive tract. This may cause abdominal pains that may extend to the back. The pain subsides when you take food and again reappears when the stomach becomes empty. It may also cause vomiting, nausea etc. With controlled diet you will get relief from the above symptoms.

Food to be Avoided

Remove spicy foods from your diet. Limit or avoid the use of black pepper, chilies, strong spices, mustard etc. Also stop the usage of alcohol and other caffeinated drinks as these drinks may increases the acidity in the digestive tract and thus aggravate your symptoms. Reduce your sodium intake and so limit your salt intake to minimum quantities. Then you have to avoid the processed and fried foods like chips, canned soups, slated meats, salted nuts etc. Also limit the intake of fatty and sugary foods as it encourages the gastric juice production for digesting these foods and it may affect you adversely.

Food that Can be Taken


Include fish that contains more omega 3 fatty acids in your diet. This is because omega 3 fatty acids will encourage the production of prostaglandins which in turn helps you in protecting the lining of the digestive tract. Fishes like sardines, salmon, mackerel etc contains omega 3 fatty acids in them.

Vitamin C and Beta Carotene

Foods that contain vitamin C and beta carotene may also help you by protecting the stomach lining. Fruits and vegetables like kiwi fruit, apricot, cabbage, carrot, kale etc are good for ulcer patients.

Amino acid

Foods containing amino acids like L-Glutamine are also found to be beneficial for ulcer patients. Foods like cheddar cheese, wheat germ, sunflower seeds, almonds, sesame seeds are the good sources of L-Glutamine.

Foods containing vitamin E and zinc are also ideal for ulcer patients. Hence whole grains are also a good recommendation for ulcer patients.
