Causes of diarrhea
Viral, bacterial and parasitic infections are responsible for most diarrhea incidences. Allergic reaction to certain foods could cause diarrhea. Diarrhea can occur as a side effect of intake of certain medications such as antibiotics.
Inability to digest lactose or gluten found in wheat, barley and rye could cause diarrhea. Chronic diarrhea could be a symptom of chronic health disorders such as diverticulitis, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.
If the fluid lost by the body is not replenished, people suffering from diarrhea could develop dehydration. Dehydration and consequent electrolyte imbalance would cause serious complications, which would require hospitalization. To prevent health complications developing from diarrhea, diarrhea patients should take enough fluid to preserve the electrolyte balance.
A person suffering from diarrhea should drink plenty of water and fluid. Fruit juices, clear vegetable soups and broths will supply essential nutrients. High fiber fruits and vegetables could worsen your diarrhea symptoms. You should avoid or limit intake of prune juice, berries, legumes, nuts, seeds, peas, corn and vegetables fruits with skin and seeds.
Cruciferous vegetables, though beneficial for the digestive health, should be avoided during diarrhea. Foods and beverages containing caffeine such as coffee, chocolates and carbonated drinks should not be consumed during diarrhea. While suffering from diarrhea, you should also avoid milk and dairy products.
As the cc improve, have well cooked and easy to digest foods. Don’t eat large meals. Have several small meals throughout the day. In the initial stage of diarrhea, you can follow the BRAT diet comprising of banana, rice, applesauce and toast.
As your condition improves, you can include cooked carrots, boiled potatoes and boiled, baked or grilled fish or skinless chicken. To reduce discomfort associated with diarrhea, you can consume yogurt. Yogurt is especially beneficial for healing diarrhea developing from antibiotic intake.
To prevent diarrhea developing from food intolerance or food allergy, you should avoid the specific foods that trigger diarrhea.
