Fear of the adverse effect of electromagnetic waves on our brains, often prevents us from talking on our cell phones for a long time.
Sometimes we come across people who complain about headache and fatigue from cell phone use. A recent study conducted by European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR) has found that there is no real threat on human health from exposure to electromagnetic field.
Electronic devices emit electromagnetic energies of different frequencies. The power lines carrying electricity generates electromagnetic waves of very low frequency, whereas the screen of your computer emits medium range frequency electromagnetic waves. Your cell phone is one of the devices that are known to produce high frequency radio waves. Some people suggest that exposure to these radio waves causes poor cognitive function, sleeping difficulties, dizziness, headache and fatigue. The SCENIHR study could not find any link between radio frequency and brain activities.
According to the researchers, sensitivity to radio waves, as reported by several individuals, is a result of the nocebo effect. Nocebo effect is a term coined in the 1960s, which is opposite of the placebo effect. Placebo effect explains the ‘feel good’ effect of a sham treatment or medication. Nocebo effect, on the other hand, is the ‘feel worse’ effect of similar dummy treatments. According to researchers, people experiencing nocebo effect, have a false belief of the side effect of a particular drug or treatment. Just like placebo effect, nocebo effect is also a behavioral and emotional condition.
Researchers of SCENIHR believe that people with fear about the harmful effect of radio frequencies on their physical health report adverse side effect of cell phone usage. According to this study, no short-term study has been able to find any conclusive association between cell phone use and risk of brain illnesses, including brain cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
Low radiation cell phones
As researchers are trying to uncover the exact link between cell phone use and brain function, Environmental Working Group (EWG) has made a list of the low radiation and high radiation cell phones. The cell phones with least radiation include Nokia 9300i, Nokia 7710, Samsung Impression, Nokia 9300, Samsung Propel Pro, Samsung Gravity, Blackberry Storm and Nokia E90. Smartphones that emit high radiations include Kyocera Jax, T-Mobile myTouch 3G, Blackberry Curve 8330, Palm Treo 600, T-Mobile Shadow, BlackBerry Bold 9000 and Blackberry Curve 8300.
