Ankle is the joint formed by the union of three bones called the tibia and fibula of the leg and the talus a large bone in the foot. The end of tibia makes the inner portion of the ankle while the end of fibula forms the outer portion. The bony knob on either side of the ankle joint is called malleoli. There are ligaments on either side of the ankle that gives stability to the ankle joints by tightly strapping the ankle joint. There is also a fibrous joint capsule around the ankle.

Causes of Ankle Pain

Ankle pain is the result of ankle sprains which is a common musculoskeletal injury. Sprains occur when the ligaments in the ankle joint get injured and it can occur on both the inner and outer portion of the ankle joint. The injuries in ligaments can be a partial or complete tear resulting from a sudden twist of the ankle. If you have prehistory of ankle sprain or if you have weak ankle muscles then you are prone to get sprain.

Ankle sprain cause severe pain initially along with some popping sensation. There may be swelling in the area immediately after the sprain. The blood vessels in the area gets injured and may leak fluid to the near by tissues. This causes the swelling. Depending on the strength of the sprain it may take  weeks to months for healing. If it is partial sprain then there will be some ankle stability and if it is a complete sprain then there will be no stability.

Any inflammation in the tendons may also cause pain in the ankle. It can be a result of immediate injury or diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis etc. inflammation in the tendon cause swelling, pain and tenderness in the affected area.

Other causes of ankle pain include gout and pseudo gout. Gout occurs when excessive uric acid in formed in the body. This uric acid get deposited in the ankle joints and then transformed in to crystals instead of excreting through the urine. These causes sever pain in the ankle joint. In pseudo gout excessive calcium gets deposited in the ankle joint and cause pain and swelling.
