Trichomoniasis is a disease caused by protozoan called trichomonas vaginalis. This is a sexually transmitted disease and it affects both men and women. It is seen in the vagina in women and in urethral tissues in men. Normally these protozoa are seen in vagina and at times they may enter in to the urinary tract and cause inflammation of the baldder.The infection caused by these protozoa makes the person more susceptible to HIV infection.
Symptoms of Trichomoniasis
Usually Trichomoniasis causes very little or no symptoms. In most cases symptoms appear with in 5 to 28 days interval. In women it causes yellowish or grey-green discharge from the vagina. The discharge may have strong odor. Sometimes women may have itching sensation in the vaginal area.
They may also experience pain while having intercourse. Some women may experience a pain while urinating and rarely do they have a pain in the lower abdomen. If the infected women in pregnant then it may leads to premature delivery giving rise to low birth weight baby.
In men it may cause pain at the time urination and urethral discharge. At times the affected person experience burning sensation while ejaculation. Some of them experience swelling and pain in the scrotum. There may be discomfort and itching of urethra. Some of the affected males show intermittent pus like discharge through urethra while most of the men do not show any symptoms.
Causes of Trichomoniasis
The protozoa spreads from one person to other while having intercourse and it mostly affects those people who have multiple sex partners. The known host of this protozoan is human being and it gets transmitted to another person when ever there is sexual contact like vagina to penis or vulva to vulva.
How to Prevent Trichomoniasis
The best method to prevent the infection is to avoid sex with multiple partners and while having sex use latex male condoms. Try to avoid douching as it will change the normal environment of the vagina and makes the woman more prone to get infection.
