For getting maximum benefits from these berries, try learning how to prepare a blueberry pie at home. For best results, the nutritious as well as yummy pies should be made with fresh blueberries. When it is not the blueberry season, you can use frozen blueberries for making the pie.
To make the crust you need 1Â½ cups of all-purpose flour, four tablespoons of cold butter, two tablespoons of cold vegetable shortening, two tablespoons of sugar, pinch of salt and a quarter cup of cold water. In a bowl, add the flour, salt and the sugar, and mix the ingredients. Add the vegetable shortening and the butter and blend the ingredients. Now add the water slowly to the ingredients to make soft dough. Put the dough in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. Remove the dough from the refrigerator and roll it out. The thickness of the pie crust should not be more than 1/8-inch thick. Place the rolled out dough on a pan. With your hands, adjust the shape of the edge of the pie crust. The edge can have a circular shape. You can even give some fancy wavy pattern to the edge. Now that the crust is ready, you can proceed with the filling of the blueberry pie.
Blueberry pie filling
Four cups of fresh or frozen blueberry
Three tablespoons of corn flour or plain flour
Six tablespoons of granulated sugar
One tablespoon of unsalted butter
One teaspoon of lemon juice
1/8 teaspoon of cinnamon
Pinch of salt
Method of preparation
Rinse the blueberries. Remove stems and leaves that may be present in the freshly picked berries. In a bowl, add the flour, salt and sugar and mix the ingredients. Add the cinnamon and the lemon juice. Blend the ingredients gently. Now add the blueberries and once again mix all the ingredients of the filling.
Place one pie crust on a baking dish and spread the blueberry filling over the crust. Put butter pieces on top of the filling. Place another rolled out dough on top of the blueberry filling. Seal the edges of the upper and lower crusts with your fingers. Chill the unbaked pie in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. Now bake the blueberry pie in a preheated oven at 350 degree Fahrenheit for about an hour or until the juice starts bubbling and the crust becomes brown.
