Anal Fissure – Causes and Treatment

Anal fissu re is characterized by a tear in the skin of the anal canal. The crack usually develops from forcibly passing large and hard stools. It causes intense pain and bleeding. Just like most cracks and tears in the skin, anal fissure could heal naturally. Often it becomes a chronic ailment, causing recurrent discomfort. Surgery might be needed to cure anal fissure that has become chronic.

Anal fissure causes



Anal fissure primarily develops from severe constipation. When a constipated person strains the anal canal while passing hard stools, the lining of the anal canal might crack, causing considerable pain, irritation and bleeding. People suffering from inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease could develop anal fissure. Swelling of the intestinal tract including the anorectal region caused by this disease might crack the lining in the anal canal.

Risk of anal fissure is greater among women after delivery. During childbirth the anal mucosa is stretched, leading to anal fissure. Although it is unclear why infants develop anal fissure, babies between 6 months and 2 years of age could develop this problem. Slowing down of blood circulation in aged people might reduce blood supply to the anorectal region, which tends to increase the risk of developing anal fissures.



Anal fissure treatment

Most anal fissures could be healed by applying corticosteroid or hydrocortisone creams. Nitroglycerine ointments are also recommended for reducing the pain and healing the wound. Botox injection is sometimes administered in the anus to relax the spasm. Taking a sitz bath, at least once a day could help to reduce the discomfort. Regular moderate exercise, such as brisk walking for about 30 to 40 minutes increases the blood circulation in your body including the anorectal region, which promotes healing.




Avoid straining your anus during bowel movement. Treat constipation by including plenty of fiber rich vegetables and fruits in your diet. Drink plenty of water and fluids to soften the stools. Natural laxatives could help to soften bowels and regularize bowel movements. Regular intake of prune juice or psyllium husk helps to reduce strain on the anorectal area while excreting. To reduce irritation in the anus, brush little baby powder around the anus after shower.
